Who is Claude Cahun? shares the extraordinary story of queer artists, Claude Cahun (Lucy Schwob) and Marcel Moore (Suzanne Malherbe), who actively resisted the Nazis during their occupation of Jersey from 1940 to 1945. With the 80th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe falling on 7 May 2025, and the high profile annual marking of the D-Day landings falling on 6 June, the play has a strong resonance with contemporary reflection on World War 2.
A key theme of the play is gender identity and sexual orientation, with strong synergy to current debates exploring transgender issues. Cahun and Moore are seen as icons by some in the lesbian community.
The play will be premiered at London’s Southwark Playhouse from 18 June to 12 July. A potential regional tour is proposed for autumn 2025 or early 2026.
Prior to presenting the full production in London, an interactive workshop will be available to the public on the 27 May, with support from Arts Council England, at the Shire Hall Museum.
Workshops (1 ½ to 2 hours depending on participant requirements) target participants are women’s and girl’s groups as well as schools, LGBTQ forums and the wider public.
