We are thrilled to present A Short History of Protest Songs, a special acoustic performance by Billy Bragg, who is generously supporting the Shire Hall Trust with this exclusive fundraising event.
Set within our historic courtroom, this intimate show will offer a rare opportunity to experience Billy’s music and storytelling up close. The performance will feature a selection of covers alongside several of his own songs, woven together with reflections on their place in the history of struggle and protest—an approach perfectly suited to the unique atmosphere of the courtroom.
Galvanised in the late 1970s by the spirit of The Clash and a passionate opposition to Margaret Thatcher’s austerity politics, Billy Bragg has spent more than four decades inspiring political engagement and empathy through song. His career has included benefit performances for the miners, the Labour Party, CND, and many others, as well as two decades at the helm of Glastonbury’s Left Field political stage. He is also a regular headliner and staunch supporter of the Tolpuddle Festival, reflecting his unwavering commitment to the Trade Union movement.
Billy’s achievements have earned widespread recognition, from the Outstanding Contribution to British Music Award at the Ivors (2018) to a street named in his honour in Barking (Bragg Close), and, most recently, a place on the Camden Music Walk of Fame alongside icons including Madness, Amy Winehouse, The Who, David Bowie, and The Kinks.
We are incredibly grateful to Billy for supporting our charity through this performance.
Join us for an unforgettable evening of acoustic music, history, and activism—right in the heart of Shire Hall.
